Mathematics is a lifelong process in which students achieve Mathematical competence through problem- solving, communication, reasoning, and making connections. During their first year as middle school students, our class will develop Mathematical Habits of the mind by engaging in productive struggle, project based learning, and the eight Mathematical Practices. In grade 6, students will study the following concepts:
Unit 1: Use Positive Rational Numbers
Students build on their knowledge of fractions by dividing frcations. Students learn to add, subtract, multiply, and divide with decimals.
Unit 2: Integers and Rational Numbers
Students work with the number line, and are introduced to all four quadrants of the coordinate plane.
Unit 3: Numeric and Algebraic Expressions
Students work with exponents, factors, and learn to generate, evaluate, and simplify numerical and algebraic expressions.
Unit 4: Represent and Solve Equations and Inequalities
Students write and solve equations and inequalities.
Unit 5: Understand and Use Ratio and Rate
Students are introduced to ratios, rates and unit rates. They learn how to compare ratios for equivalence, and represent ratios on a graph. Students learn to solve unit rate problems.
Unit 6: Understand and Use Percent
Students are introduced to percents, and learn to relate fractions to decimals and percents. Students use percent to solve real world- problems.
Unit 7: Solve Area, Surface Area, and Volume Properties
Students work with concepts in geometry in order to find area, surface area, and volume.
Unit 8: Display, Describe, and Summarize Data
Students learn how to collect, display, and summarize data.
